Shopify POS stands for “point of sale” or “point of sale” and allows physical stores to use Shopify to manage and track their sales. Currently one of the most popular online sales platforms, Shopify has been a major player in the e-commerce industry since 2005. While the company owed its initial success to online sales, in 2013 founders Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand and Scott Lake have decided to branch out into the world of retail.

Offering a reasonable pricing structure, intuitive design, and comprehensive customer support system, Shopify POS has taken the small business world by storm. Like its parent software, this app is easy to navigate, set up, and use. However, it was created specifically for online retail and some improvements are possible in terms of functionality . Like most tech-savvy companies, Shopify is constantly updating its product, patching flaws in its system quickly and efficiently.

Prices listed   above  do not include sales tax  . Shopify offers a 10% discount for annual plan participants and 20% for biannual plan participants. Each pricing tier comes with the option to add the “Retail Plan” for an additional $49 per month; this includes hardware integrations and some additional features such as staff accounts and registry changes.

Shopify offers a 14-day free trial period. No credit card is required for the trial. You do not need to sign a contract at any time and there are no cancellation fees. It might sound unwieldy, but if you’re using Shopify Payments, it’s not that hard to figure out. For small start-up businesses, the basic plan gives you a decent number of features for a very affordable price. If you’re expanding or already have a fairly successful business that handles a higher number of transactions, you’ll want one of the more advanced plans and you’ll be rewarded with a lower processing rate.

Cloud-based or locally installed

Shopify is cloud-based and online stores and inventory are hosted on Shopify’s servers. However, when you log into the POS app, most of your data is downloaded and stored on the iPad itself, allowing you to process cash transactions without an internet connection. However, you cannot process transactions by card or access your customer database. You cannot therefore assign a customer to a transaction without creating an entirely new profile. Also, you can’t access the POS at all if you lose your connection before you’ve had a chance to log into the app. And if you log out of the app before the connection is restored and the app has a chance to sync back to the cloud, you will lose any transaction/customer data you collected during the outage. Also note that on Android devices you will not have any offline functionality.

While this level of offline functionality isn’t exceptional (compared to Shopify’s competitors), it’s decent enough that you might be able to function quite well during a standard internet outage.

If you need other hardware, such as cash drawers, printers, and barcode scanners, Shopify has an add-on offering for use with the POS app. Although the options on the site are somewhat limited, Shopify adapts quite well to existing hardware.

Ease of use

Shopify POS stands out when it comes to design. It’s hard to imagine points that could trip anyone up while navigating the system. Once you open the app, you can navigate the basic forward and backward functions. Usability is the hallmark of Shopify. For merchants who don’t have the time or know-how to devote to training, this system should be attractive. I had no problems setting up my online store or POS, and it was very easy to generate reports, add customers(manually or with a swipe of a card), add and import products, set variations, and actually make sales (cash, credit, and store credit). I was ready to go within the hour and didn’t expect anyone to take more than a few minutes to learn how to sell.

Compatible credit card processors

Obviously, Shopify POS is designed to work hand-in-hand with its e-commerce platform. If you already have a Shopify store, your inventory will automatically sync with the point of sale. You can then decide whether you want to be able to sell all of your products equally or separate them into in-store only or online only purchases. If you don’t have a Shopify store, you need to add your inventory to the back-end, item by item (I would only suggest this if you only have a few products) or by CSV import. Both methods are easy, but the first obviously takes a bit more time than the last. You have the option to add photos and categorize your products, such as color, size, material, style, etc. You can include any details you want, including tags for Internet searches. It’s easy to add new products, and tax rates are set automatically based on your location.

There’s another big way this POS software excels in usability: the Shopify mobile app. The application allows you to manage your store directly from a mobile device and can manage everything: add items and upload photos, change prices and contact customers by phone or email.

Reviews for Shopify POS are generally positive, but a few recurring themes from people unhappy with the product:

  • Inventory:  The inventory functionality could still use a bit of strengthening. I would like to see Shopify at least add low stock alerts. Many customers cite Shopify’s annoyance in this area and feel that storage capabilities are lacking.
